Cancellation Policies
When we must cancel or modify programs, we make a decision by 8am on the program day at the latest and:
- Notify all registered participants by email
- Update our online program calendar
- Update our outgoing voicemail on our office phone
We will cancel or modify our programs under the following circumstances:
All Programs
- Air Quality Index of 125 or higher
- Greater than 50% chance of thunderstorms or moderate to heavy rainfall during program time. We rely on the hourly forecasts from:
- NOAA
- Weather Underground
- Weather related advisory (such as for heat, high winds, etc.) during program time
Paddling Programs
- If sustained winds are over 12 miles per hour
- Wind Speed and Direction Forecasts
- For Connecticut River programs, if the river gauge in Montague City is above 17ft
- If the air and water temperature combined are less than 120 degrees Fahrenheit
- If water quality at our program location is unsafe for boating (we would still run a program if safe for boating but unsafe for swimming).
- Check Connecticut River water quality
- Check water quality dashboard for the Department of Conservation and Recreation
- A program will be suspended at the first sight/sound of thunder or lightning, and we will remain off the water for 30 minutes after the last sight/sound of thunder or lightning.
Winter Programs
- If the “feels like” temperature is below 10 degrees Fahrenheit (for outdoor programs)
- If there is a prediction of weather (snow, ice, etc.) that would make driving to and from the program potentially unsafe.
Unusual Circumstances
- If there is a public emergency at our program location
- At any time before or during a program if a situation arises that has an impact on our program's risk management plan or intended staffing ratios
